Trim Teign Background
Trim Teign was formed when Volunteering in Health volunteer, Pauline Janin, was asked to find a way to get locals to use their Coastal Information Centre recently moved into Teignmouth hospital.
With a background as HR Executive (FCIPD) and successfully introducing wellbeing initiatives in the workplace and community, offering a weekly weight loss group seemed ideal to increase the footfall and help people to get fitter and healthier.
And it worked!
TrimTeign has now been extended and rolled out to the Alice Cross Centre, and over £1000 has been raised in the 12 months since it's launch in September 2017.
Volunteering in Health
Volunteering in Health provides various services to help people live independently for as long as possible.
Main activities are Transport for medical appointments, Home Help, Befriending Service, Memory Café and signposting to other services. It is reliant on nearly 200 volunteers and works closely with NHS.
Alice Cross Centre
The Alice Cross Community Centre is a local charity, encouraging the over 50’s to have more socially inclusive & active life through fun activities, developing new interests, staying fit, enjoying fresh lunches and making lasting friendships.
Our Future Plans
We are delighted to have recently been offered a grant from Sport England which means that our Activity Programme at Alice Cross is now fully operational
We are hopeful of receiving a Research Grant from The NHS Torbay Medical Research Fund with assistance from Dr Felix Gradinger (MA, MSc, PhD) to show how our voluntary-led initiative is reducing obesity locally, and reducing NHS costs.
Our Next Steps, subject to resources:
• Roll out to local employers, schools etc to train their staff to run Trim Teign programmes
• Identify more volunteers, instructors and venues to roll out further in surrounding area
• Work with GPs and other organisations to refer clients to us
• As a non-profit organisation created within VIH and Alice Cross, most surplus goes there although we reserve the right to retain 25% as a fund to help residents who cannot afford the modest TT fees, and/or provide a free community facility (eg Trim Trail or outdoor gym equipment)
We have also added other activities such as fitness classes, healthy lunches and cookery workshops and discounted Leisure memberships at local pools & gyms and training for volunteer TrimTeign coaches in other areas
